About RD Nutrition
Melanie (Mel) is a University of British Columbia graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Health, majoring in Dietetics. She is a member in good standing with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. Mel works as both a private practice dietitian and a clinical research dietitian in the Greater Vancouver area. As such, she is well versed in both preventative nutrition health care and chronic disease management.
Regardless of where she provides care, Mel approaches nutrition counseling with a holistic mindset; keeping in mind that food is much more than just fuel. She realizes that food is culture, it is creation, it is social and sometimes it is comfort.
Mel translates evidence-based nutrition recommendations into practical eating strategies to help people turn their nutrition goals into sustainable changes. She will not prescribe a rigid eating plan that has strict rules around food. She promotes mindful and intuitive eating that focuses on a person's health, not their body weight or size. Her integrative approach supports clients to achieve sustained improvements in not only their nutritional health, but their activity level, sleep quality and stress management.
Why Work With a Dietitian?
Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist?
In B.C., the term 'nutritionist' is not a protected title, meaning anyone who wants to call themselves a 'nutritionist' can do so! A Registered Dietitian is a regulated health professional, meaning they are governed by a regulatory College. This College ensures they provide safe, factual and ethical nutrition care to the public. In order to practice, Dietitians must receive 5 years of university education, undergo rigorous practical training, pass a licensing exam and continually update their education by keeping on top of new research and skills within the realm of food, nutrition and health. In other words, Registered Dietitians are your best choice for finding evidence-based nutrition support.
Why Work with Me?
Unfortunately, some people seem to think a Dietitian judges people's diets, tells people what foods they shouldn't eating and takes away all the fun and joy from eating.
You will be happy to learn that that is not what a Dietitian does, nor is that anything close to what Mel promotes!
Mel will not prescribe a rigid eating plan that has strict rules around food. She promotes mindful and intuitive eating that focusing on a person's health, not their body weight or size. Her integrative approach encourages positive changes that manifest into sustained improvements in not only nutritional health, but activity, sleep and stress management, so all facets of health are supported.
Understand how there truly are no no 'good' or 'bad' foods, and how to healthfully incorporate all the foods you enjoy into a nourishing, flexible diet.
